Dove creates Real Beauty Productions with Shonda Rhimes at the helm

3/31/2017

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — Dove on Thursday announced the creation of its collaborative content studio Real Beauty Productions and named “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How To Get Away With Murder” and “Scandal” showrunner Shonda Rhimes the studio’s inaugural creative director.

“True to our Real Beauty Pledge, Dove remains committed to only feature real women, to never digitally alter their appearance, and to help the next generation develop a positive relationship with beauty,” Dove VP marketing Nick Soukas said. “And, we are taking our leadership to the next level. We are thrilled to partner with Shonda and real women everywhere. By putting the power directly into the hands of real women and girls, they can truly represent who they are, as beautiful, confident and diverse individuals.”

The studio’s goal is to have women share their personal stories at DoveRealBeauty.com that expand beyond typically portrayed definitions of beauty. The stories will inspire films that will be created throughout 2017, and it has set the goal of hiring an entirely female crew.

“I have always told stories to show us who we really are – our real human truths,” Rhimes said. “The way women are depicted on our screens – big and small – must be challenged. I am personally eager to see the real and unexpected stories women will share with us.”
