Ben & Jerry’s names a new CEO

8/16/2018
Changes are coming to Ben & Jerry’s leadership team.

The ice cream giant just announced the appointment of Matthew McCarthy, a 21-year veteran of the company, to its chief executive officer role.

“We are delighted to welcome Matthew, who brings a wealth of commercial experience, along with rock-solid values and a courageous vision for the role businesses can and should play in the world,” Anuradha Mittal, Ben & Jerry's board of directors chairperson, said. “We look forward to working with him and to continuing our mission as a social justice company which just happens to make pretty good ice cream.”

McCarthy has previous experience at Unilever, where he was responsible for increasing the social impact of various brands including Hellmann’s. He earned a Corporate Progress Award from the Humane Society for the condiment brands’ push for the use of certified cage-free eggs, which was executed three years ahead of plan.

He also committed the Knorr brand to higher welfare standards for its chickens, which was done in collaboration with the Global Animal Partnership and Compassion in World Farming NGOs.

Most recently, McCarthy and his team created Growing Roots, Unilever’s first organic snacking brand with a mission to support urban farming in underserved communities.
