YQ by Yoplait focuses on smarter, not sweeter yogurt

YQ by Yoplait is making its yogurt aisle debut with a smarter, not sweeter philosophy.

The Minneapolis-based company’s new product adheres to that statement by starting off its process with ultra-filtered milk, which is milk that has been filtered to concentrate the amount of protein while removing much of its sugar, or lactose. It is then combined with active cultures and then goes through a special churning technique that has been perfect by Yoplait in France, the company said.

Coming in eight varieties — plain, coconut, peach, mango, lime, strawberry, blueberry and vanilla — each come packaged in a 5.3-oz. serving. The plain flavor contains 1 g of sugar per serving and 17 g or protein while the flavored varieties contain 9 g of sugar and 15 g of protein.

“We talked to thousands of people to really understand what they were missing from the yogurt aisle. We heard loud and clear the need for a smart snack option – something made with simple ingredients, less sugar and higher protein,” Doug Martin, VP of marketing for Yoplait USA, said. “What we've been able to accomplish with YQ by Yoplait delivers on this desire. Through our use of simple ingredients, ultra-filtered milk and active cultures, we've created a protein-packed, less sweet flavor profile with a thick, smooth, extra creamy texture. It's unlike anything that exists in the yogurt aisle today.”

YQ by Yoplait is gluten-free, 99% lactose-free, and contains no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors, the company said. It will hit major grocery and retail store shelves in late June and retail for $1.49 each or $4.99 for a 26-oz. tub of the plain or vanilla flavors.
