At NACDS’ Total Store Expo, Drug Store News sat down for a conversation with Dr. Florencia Ziemke, founder and medical director of Evexia Medical, to talk about the proliferation of GLP-1 medication for weight loss and its nausea side effects.

“The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal in nature, namely nausea vomiting and constipation,” Dr. Ziemke said. “Nausea can occur in anywhere between 15% and 30% of GLP-1 medication users. Typically nausea presents at the beginning of the medication use and every time that dose is increased and traditionally it gets better over time. The challenge is that nausea is an unpleasant experience.”

Dr. Ziemke said that current recommendations for nausea treatment include the short-term use of anti-nausea medications, antiemetics, adjusting the dose of the medication or implementing dietary lifestyle changes, such as stopping to eat when feeling full, reducing the size of your portion and avoiding spicy high-fat foods and limiting alcohol consumption.

But in her practice, the doctor has been using and observing the effectiveness of Sea Band, an FDA-approved device for nausea relief in motion sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, anesthesia-related nausea and chemotherapy-related nausea.
