Emporos is unveiling Patient Pay, a solution designed to change how patients pay for prescriptions. Following an early access phase, Patient Pay is now available for all pharmacies, enabling them to offer text-to-pay payment options.

The company said that Patient Pay addresses a need in modern pharmacy care: simplifying payments for patients while reducing workload for pharmacy staff and increasing collections.

With just a few clicks within their POS, pharmacies can notify patients via text when their prescriptions are ready. Patients can pay for their medications via a secure link with their credit card or digital wallets—no app download required.

“Our goal is to meet patients where they are, allowing them to pay for their prescriptions as easily as they would pay for dinner or a rideshare,” said Presley Kelleher, vice president of product and customer experience for Emporos. “Patient Pay not only improves the patient experience but also streamlines pharmacy operations, ensuring quicker checkouts, reduced physical contact and more time for pharmacy staff to focus on patient care. With this solution, our customers can take advantage of the safest and latest payment technology available anywhere in retail.

How Patient Pay works:

  • Simple Alerts: Pharmacists start a transaction in their POS. With just a few clicks they’re able to send a text message to alert patients that their prescriptions are available.
  • Compliant Payment Collection: Patients click the secure link they received via text, input their name and date of birth to access their prescription information, and proceed to payment.
  • Payment Portal: The browser-based payment system is accessible without the need for an app. Patients can pay with a credit card or digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • QR Code: Patients arriving at the pharmacy show their QR code to verify payment. This can be done inside the pharmacy, at curbside, bedside, or drive thru. Pharmacists simply scan the QR code and complete the transaction.
  • Seamless Integration: Pharmacies can use Patient Pay within the Emporos POS to minimize hardware dependency, reduce administrative tasks, and speed up payment collection.

Pointing out that given text notifications have a 98% open rate and 32% of consumers pay a health-related bill within five minutes of receiving a secure text link, Emporos said.

Emporos added that for pharmacies, it enables faster revenue capture, improved efficiency, greater mobility and reduced dependence on credit card readers. This is especially powerful for bedside medication delivery programs, ensuring patients receive and pay for their Rxs before leaving the hospital. Patient Pay also supports faster pick-up for facilities that offer curbside pickup, line-busting, drive-thru and mail-order services; or those that simply want to reduce lines and meet customers’ expectations for digital experiences.

In addition, Emporos noted that with the combination of Patient Pay and its latest products, consumers can reduce patient pickup times. Patients also receive transparency around medication costs ahead of pickup and the ability to pay using their preferred form of payment.
