Food Lion sponsors Men’s and Women’s Championship Basketball Tournament
Over the past 30 years, Food Lion has been helping CIAA communities through academic scholarships, jobs and career opportunities, as well as through hunger relief initiatives.
Food Lion is sponsoring the 2024 CIAA Men’s and Women’s Championship Basketball Tournament in Baltimore – the nation’s oldest historically Black athletic conference—taking place from Feb. 26 to March 3.
This year also marks the retailer’s 30th year of partnership with the CIAA. All 13 Historically Black Colleges and Universities are within Food Lion’s operating area, and over the past 30 years, the retailer has been nourishing CIAA communities through academic scholarships, jobs and career opportunities and hunger relief initiatives.

Since the start of the partnership, the company has worked to:
- Donate more than $7.5 million in scholarships to CIAA schools;
- The Food Lion Feeds organization helped to nourish students who face food insecurity issues on campus by providing over $200,000 in grants to improve and help stock pantries and nutrition lounges on CIAA campuses;
- Provided jobs for CIAA students and alumni at all stages of their careers, and has hired over 40 CIAA students directly into the Retail Management Trainee program, which is a one-year program for recent graduates that provides opportunities to work with retail department managers, store managers and corporate leaders to learn everything about the business and Food Lion’s brand, strategy and culture; and
- Part of Food Lion’s expanded partnership this year includes an increase in scholarship funds for CIAA students, and on the “Road to CIAA,” Food Lion is restocking pantries and providing gift cards to students and student-athletes.
