GSK Consumer Healthcare commits to making 1B recyclable toothpaste tubes by 2025

The company said it expects its effort to create more than 1 billion recyclable toothpaste tubes per year by 2025.

GSK Consumer Healthcare is making a big move as part of its sustainability journey. The consumer health giant is working with two global packaging suppliers to launch fully recyclable toothpaste tubes across its oral health brands, including Sensodyne, Parodontax and Aquafresh.

The company said it expects the move to create more than 1 billion recyclable toothpaste tubes per year by 2025.

The first initiative is being undertaken with tube manufacturer Albea and will see GSK Consumer Healthcare switching from aluminum barrier laminates to the company’s patented Greenleaf laminate, beginning with Sensodyne Pronamel tools that will be available in fully recyclable alternatives by July in Europe. The company also will work with EPL Global to produce tubes in Platina laminate. Both the laminates have passed recycling readiness tests by the Association of Plastic Recyclers in the United States and Europe’s RecyClass.

“We are fighting every day to help eradicate preventable oral health problems and to provide people with better, more sustainable oral care solutions that don’t compromise on quality,” said Sarah McDonald, GSK Consumer Healthcare vice president of sustainability. “We have made the commitment that 100% of our product packaging will be recyclable or reusable, where quality and safety permits, by 2025. This is just one part of our ongoing sustainability journey, in which we are working to address the environmental and societal barriers to everyday health.”

The packaging shift is just the latest in the company’s sustainability efforts in the oral care category, where it is a leading manufacturer globally. In Germany earlier this year, the company debuted its first sustainable toothbrush, Dr. Best. The product is made from sustainably cultivated bamboo with a biodegradable handle and features plastic-free packaging made from recycled cardboard. With its Sensodyne and Aquafresh brands, the company has launched plastic-free toothbrush packaging, including a cellulose gum window that lets shoppers see the brush inside.
