H-E-B is adding a pharmacy resource for its patients who want to dispose of unused and unwanted medication at home. The San Antonio-based retailer now is offering DisposeRx at of its pharmacy locations throughout Texas.
DisposeRx is a non-toxic solution to help dispose of unused or expired medications. Users can mix water and the DisposeRx powder with the medication in the pill vial to isolate the medicine in a polymer gel, allowing them to dispose of the vial in the household trash. The product will be available to H-E-B patients upon requests, and pharmacists will be able to counsel patients about how to properly use DisposeRx.
"At H-E-B, the health and safety of our customers is a top priority," said Craig Norman, senior vice president of H-E-B Pharmacy. "As we see a rise in opioid abuse and other prescription drug misuse in communities across the nation, it's important that we offer our customers, at no cost, a safe, effective, easy-to-use disposal option they can use at home."
H-E-B noted that its other efforts around medication disposal and curbing medication abuse include participation in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s prescription drug take-back events, pharmacist education regarding medications and potential for prescription drug abuse, and stocking naloxone as an option for patients at risk of experience opioid-related issues.
