The United States Food and Drug Administration recently decided to allow retail pharmacies to offer abortion pills.

According to Reuters, the decision was finalized by the FDA on Jan. 3 after reviewing applications from Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, the two companies that currently make Mifepristone and Mifeprex.

On its website the FDA shared, “The January 2023 modification to the Mifepristone REMS Program removed the requirement that did not allow mifepristone to be dispensed from retail pharmacies. While pharmacy certification is required, any pharmacy that meets the requirements of the Mifepristone REMS Program is eligible for certification.”

The pharmacy certification process, “ensures that pharmacies are aware of and agree to follow applicable REMS requirements and ensures that mifepristone is only dispensed pursuant to prescriptions that are written by certified prescribers,” the FDA said.
