The NACDS family lost a dear friend on June 3, with the passing of Begley Award recipient and industry icon Harvey Alstodt. He was 84.

Alstodt led and served the beauty and chain drug industries for nearly 50 years. He excelled in senior executive positions at Foster Grant; Del Laboratories; Coty Beauty US; MBA Beauty; and Diversified Beauty.

He was a long-time and active member of the NACDS Retail Advisory Board, which advises the NACDS board of directors on total-store issues.

NACDS in 2009 honored Alstodt with the Robert B. Begley Award, which was established in 1980 in memory of former NACDS chairman of the Board Robert B. Begley. It honors an individual who possess qualities of great personal warmth, generous spirit and long-time service to the industry.

Friends are remembering Alstodt as a great man who was generous with his time, and who was passionate about excelling and about ensuring those around him excelled as well. He is described as a “force of nature” whose motto for life was “Live, Love and Laugh.”

Condolences may be sent to his wife, Melody Alstodt, at 224 Grand Point Drive, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. 33418. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimers Foundation or to the American Heart Association.
