NACDS offers resources for virtual congressional outreach

NACDS is urging members to take virtual action, in the wake of late-breaking changes in Congress' operational response to COVID-19 that have made it appropriate to cancel the 12th Annual NACDS RxIMPACT Day on Capitol Hill that was planned for March 10-11.

Over 400 advocates from across the nation were set to attend to make a huge impact for pro-patient and pro-pharmacy policies.

NACDS said it remains vitally important to educate Congress about the biggest issues facing pharmacy: pharmacy closures, Medicare Part D DIR fee reforms, and privacy protections.

"We continue to advocate on these issues because we know that Congress remains focused on necessary legislative action, even as Congress and pharmacy engage in the current top priority of COVID-19 response," NACDS said.

NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson and Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., the only pharmacist serving in the U.S. Congress, have made a video urging members to take action.  

In the video, Anderson urges, "While pharmacy advocates cannot be here and we can and must engage on our issues. We invite you to use the virtual fly in resource NACDS has created. Your story is essential to defend and advance patients' access to their trusted pharmacists and pharmacies. Your story is essential to help reduce out of pocket drug costs. And your story is essential to fairness and viability for pharmacies."  

Carter added, "As the only pharmacist serving in Congress I understand the barriers that stand in the way of patient care. DIR fees certainly do present a dire situation for pharmacists, pharmacies, and patients. More and more members of Congress understand this issue. Now is an important time to continue that education and urge real change. When pharmacists come to Capitol Hill they are very effective in making that case. Those white coats send a powerful message. While the NACDS fly in had to be cancelled it’s time to send that message in other ways. As a pharmacist I know pharmacies are working very hard during this coronavirus situation. I want to thank pharmacists and pharmacies for that. This is an important time to help patients and to advocate for the policies that will help patients in the long term."
