Amazon, USPS enter deal for Sunday package delivery

SEATTLE — Customers of Amazon living in New York and Los Angeles can get their packages delivered on Sundays, courtesy of the U.S. Postal Service.

The online retailer announced the new service Monday, directed at members of the premium Amazon Prime service living in the New York and Los Angeles areas. Next year, the retailer will also roll it out to members in Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Phoenix and other cities.

"If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can order a backpack for your child on Friday and be packing it for them Sunday night," Amazon VP worldwide operations and customer service Dave Clark said. "We're excited that now every day is an Amazon delivery day, and we know our Prime members, who voraciously shop on Amazon, will love the additional convenience they will experience as part of this new service."

Customers of the retailer can add items to their cart and will see the Sunday delivery promise at checkout, when it's available in their region. Amazon isn't providing too many details about the deal, but the USPS is on board.

"As online shopping continues to increase, the Postal Service is very happy to offer shippers like Amazon the option of having packages delivered on Sunday," USPS postmaster general and CEO Patrick Donahoe said. "With this new service, the Postal Service is now delivering packages seven days a week in select cities. Customers can expect the same reliable and valued service that the Postal Service currently provides."
