Americans split on Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON D.C. — The percentage of Americans who approve of the Affordable Care Act reached its highest level of 48%, according to a new CBS News poll.

The poll, conducted by telephone Jan. 13-17 among a random sample of 1,257 adults, also found that 22% of those surveyed think the ACA, otherwise known as Obamacare, should be repealed entirely, the lowest percentage since the news organization first asked the question in 2013.

However, Americans are clearly split about the ACA. Although 48 percent approve of the healthcare care law, an almost equal percentage, 47%, disapprove, including 32% percent who disapprove strongly.

Based upon party lines, 61% of Republicans strongly disapprove of the ACA, while 44% of Democrats strongly approve.

Approximately 60% of those surveyed are very concerned that if the law is repealed before a replacement is enacted, individuals covered under the ACA would no longer have health insurances. An additional 24% said they are somewhat concerned.
