APhA publishes new book on motivational interviewing for health professionals
WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has announced the release of “Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible Approach,” a book that presents a new way of teaching the theory and practice of motivational interviewing to healthcare professionals.
Motivational interviewing has been shown to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, promote behavior change, improve patient satisfaction with care and increase retention rates in complex case management, according to authors Bruce A. Berger, PhD, and William A. Villaume, PhD.
The book aims to provide a practical, step-by-step approach for using motivational interviewing skills and tools in all practice settings. To illustrate the use and application of motivational interviewing, the book presents case studies and multiple dialogues between healthcare professionals and patients.
Berger and Villaume are professors emeritus, Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy and co-developers of comMIt (Comprehensive Motivational Interviewing Training).
