Cardinal Health MedSync Advantage aims to increase patient adherence, pharmacy efficiencies

5/23/2016

With some 10,000 people becoming eligible for Medicare every day and estimates of the cost of medication nonadherence reaching as high as $300 billion, managing an influx of patients and their prescriptions while working to control costs and deliver improved outcomes are among the biggest challenges facing community pharmacy today.

To help independent pharmacists face these challenges, Cardinal Health has unveiled MedSync Advantage™, a web-based medication synchronization tool that can boost adherence, improve pharmacy operations efficiency and also deliver more Medication Therapy Management opportunities to pharmacists and help increase prescription volume. The tool is one of several new offerings that Cardinal Health is making available at RBC 2016 through its comprehensive Reach for the Stars suite of solutions.

Built by the Cardinal Health innovation lab Fuse, MedSync Advantage™ was designed with the input of community pharmacists, resulting in a tool that not only makes identification of patients in need of pharmacist intervention easier, but also offers integration with a pharmacy’s workflow management system. The program allows access to Cardinal Health customers with a single login through the Cardinal Health Order Express customer ordering platform, and offers daily or monthly reporting options.

“We believe medication synchronization is a core competency for medication therapy management expansion in the pharmacy, and we want to prepare our pharmacies to move toward a value-based pharmacy model for payment in the future,” Cardinal Health’s SVP retail independent sales Steve Lawrence said. “MedSync AdvantageTM allows us to do that by re-engineering the pharmacy to allow for a more patient-centric approach to care.”

Once a patient is identified, MedSync AdvantageTM coordinates prescriptions for monthly pickup, automating the process, creating a more predictable inventory and offering various incremental revenue opportunities, including increased prescription volumes and added refills, and a boost in adherence of as much as 32% (based on a recent National Community Pharmacists Association study — all benefits that independent pharmacists are looking to bring to their patients.

“We've had the opportunity to look at Cardinal Health's medication synchronization product, and it's by far the best product that I've looked at," Larry Schieber, pharmacist and owner of Schieber Family Pharmacy in Circleville, Ohio, told DSN. “We can get a lot of patients enrolled in this medication synchronization program, which is really a win-win for everybody. It's a win for the patient, and it's a win for us because it evens out our workflow and helps us operate more efficiently.”
