Former Target chairman and ceo dies at 69

NEW YORK Kenneth Macke, former chairman and chief executive officer of what would later become Target, died Saturday at age 69 of complications from Parkinson’s disease.

After graduating college, Macke became a sales trainee at Dayton Hudson, of which Target was a division at the time. Moving through the ranks, he eventually became the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. He retired at age 55 in 1994. Dayton Hudson took on the Target name in 1999.

Macke was born Dec. 16, 1938 in Carroll, Iowa, to Leonard and Carol Macke. He graduated from Drake University in 1961. In addition to his position at Dayton Hudson, he also served on the boards of General Mills, Pillsbury and Unisys.

He is survived by his wife, three children, two siblings and five grandchildren.
