FTC sends warning to lens companies selling without a prescription

10/19/2007

WASHINGTON The Federal Trade Commission has sent warning letters to 15 sellers of non-corrective, cosmetic contact lenses who appear to be selling the lenses to the consumers without prescriptions.

The FTC has a specific rule called the Contact Lens Rule, which requires sellers to have a valid prescription or authority from a prescriber before dispensing corrective or noncorrective cosmetic lenses to consumers.

The warning letters include guidance for sellers on their obligations, directing them to “The Contact Lens Rule: A Guide for Prescribers and Sellers” and “Complying with the Contact Lens Rule.”
