Harris Teeter unveils ‘green’ store design
MATTHEWS, N.C. Resurgent supermarket and pharmacy chain Harris Teeter has unveiled a new, environmentally friendly format this month and is preparing to expand the “green” store concept to three additional stores in coming months.
The 181-store operator opened its first eco-friendly supermarket near Charlottesville, Va., earlier this month, and an additional store is under construction in Mount Pleasant, N.C., according to a report in the Charleston Post and Courier. The chain is also applying new environmental standards to two more developing stores in northern Virginia and Maryland, the report states.
Among the eco-friendly features: energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration, recycled building materials and water-saving toilets in the bathrooms. The new sites will also include carbon monoxide detectors, according to the Post and Courier.
Based in North Carolina, Harris Teeter has regained its growth momentum, with stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland and Delaware. The chain will hold its next two grand openings June 3, including a new supermarket in Winston Salem, N.C., and a supermarket with a pharmacy in Suffolk, Va.
