Home Depot rolls out affordable LED light bulbs

8/23/2010

ATLANTA National hardware chain The Home Depot is offering what it calls the first affordable LED light bulbs with power comparable to that of 40-watt incandescent bulbs.

The chain is selling the energy-efficient LED bulbs for $19.97, under the EcoSmart brand. Two years ago, Home Depot said, 60-watt and 100-watt bulbs cost $90 and $360, respectively. They are available on www.homedepot.com and will be available in all the chain’s U.S. stores by the end of September.

“The Home Depot has stepped forward with the most cost-effective LED, employing the latest and most advanced LED technology available,” Home Depot EVP merchandising Craig Menear said in a statement. “Our partnerships with leading LED manufacturers including Philips, Lighting Science Group and Cree have enabled us to be the first in the market to offer affordable options for a wide array of fixture types for a consumer’s home.”
