More education on Affordable Care Act needed in Hispanic communities, AARP says

WASHINGTON — The country's largest organization representing retired and elderly people is pushing for education on healthcare reform among Hispanic communities.

AARP said Monday that it would start a new effort focused on increasing education among Hispanic communities on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and to prepare families for the opening of health exchanges this fall, collaborating with groups like the National Council of La Raza, the Hispanic Federation, the League of United Latin American Citizens and Esperanza.

According to AARP, Hispanics make up one of the largest uninsured populations in the country, with 30.1% of them lacking insurance, compared with 11.1% of non-Hispanic whites.

"AARP recognizes the need for educating all Americans about the healthcare law, and we want to make sure that those without coverage have the resources and knowledge they need to get it," AARP senior adviser for Hispanic education and outreach Andres Castillo said. "Working with these Hispanic organizations will allow us to amplify our reach in these communities and educate families that need this information."
