Price Chopper offers events promoting diabetes awareness

11/11/2014

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — In recognition of American Diabetes Month in November, Price Chopper has developed food- and health-related programs to help promote awareness on the issues surrounding diabetes and the people who are impacted by the disease.

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood-glucose levels are higher than normal but are not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Cost estimates for the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is approaching one-quarter of a trillion dollars.

“The presence of diabetes is growing in our communities. The American Diabetes Association has shown that 9.3% of the American population had diabetes, which is an increase from 8.3% in 2010. Preventing complications from diabetes and managing glucose and cholesterol is vital for patients,” said Kathy Bryant, Price Chopper’s VP of pharmacy.

Price Chopper Pharmacy helps patients manage diabetes through the Diabetes AdvantEdge Program, a complete diabetes care solution that provides patients with free diabetes medications, supplies and a free blood-glucose meter. Also, during the month of November, The Cooking School at Market Bistro is offering two diabetes-friendly cooking classes. In addition, senior nutritionist Ellie Wilson and pharmacist Justin George will be available to answer questions.

Price Chopper will also be hosting a Facebook chat with a panel of experts, including Price Chopper dietitians, Price Chopper pharmacists and a certified diabetes educator on the Price Chopper Facebook page on Nov. 13.
