Report: ACIP recommends FluMist over traditional flu shot for healthy children ages 2 years to 8 years

7/7/2014

LEAWOOD, Kan. — According to a report from the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted unanimously to recommend that healthy children between the ages of 2 years and 8 gears be inoculated with a live attenuated influenza vaccine like FluMist, as opposed to the traditional flu shot.

According to the AAFP News report, "[t]he influenza workgroup examined research that showed healthy young children were less likely to get the flu when given the nasal spray versus an injection."

The ACIP also discussed which pneumococcal vaccine should be recommended for adults and which HPV vaccine should be recommended and on what schedule. However, no votes were taken on those issues.
