Report: Hannaford store in Albany, N.Y., features gym

5/27/2014

NEW YORK — As grocers place an increased emphasis on health and wellness, Hannaford is taking it a step further by implementing a gym inside an Albany location, according to a news report.

WPTV.com reported that the 5,600-sq.-ft. gym, which is free to use, is located just past the pharmacy counter and offers treadmills, stationary bicycles, cardio machines and a Zumba room.

The idea is the result of a meeting between Hannaford, the local YMCA and Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan. The goal: To help local residents improve their health through an offering that was convenient, accessible and free, the report stated. The grocer had the extra space available and it seemed like a natural fit.

The gym has a personal trainer provided by the YMCA, a health care associate from CDPHP is on hand to answer questions and enroll new customers and a Hannaford-registered dietitian can offer health-eating advice.

The gym is the only one in the 184-store chain, and company officials say there are no plans to expand the concept, according to the news report.
