Report: Same-day delivery has growing appeal among consumers

9/21/2015

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A new report from market researcher Packaged Facts is finding that convenience is among the most important things for consumers. In particular, the report documents the rise in desire for fast delivery among online shoppers, noting that 3 in 10 survey respondents have ordered something for same-day delivery in the last 12 months.

“Same-day delivery is already part of the daily lives of a substantial minority of online consumers," David Sprinkle, research director at Packaged Facts, said. “Over the next five years, same-day delivery is expected to enter the online shopping experience of many more consumers, and become a more prominent part of our retail culture.”

The two retailers who benefit the most from shoppers looking to get their orders through same-day delivery are Amazon and Walmart, with 44% choosing Amazon and 37% going with Walmart. Amazon in particular has made a strong push this past year to expand its Amazon Prime Now service, which offers one- and two-hour delivery on certain items.

When it comes to grocery items, Package Facts points out that companies like Instacart — which just inked a deal with Target for grocery delivery — might start to challenge this market share, especially given that 24% of same-day shoppers choose Target. Packaged Facts data points toward a 22% increase in online grocery sales in 2014 over 2013, bringing in more than $23 billion.
