Reports: Storied A&P supermarket rumored to be filing for bankruptcy

7/16/2015

NEW YORK — The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company may soon file for bankruptcy, according to a New York Post report published Wednesday

A supermarket that was at one time the largest U.S. retailer could file for Chapter 11 by the end of the week in what is being described as a “pre-packaged” bankruptcy, which would divvy up the company’s best locations.

A&P spokespeople have reported that no decision has yet been made, "and it would be inaccurate and irresponsible to suggest otherwise,” The Post reported. “

However, A&P has already hired Evercore Partners, an investment bank that specializes in selling assets, according to the report.
