Reports: Supermarket chain Ukrop’s up for sale
RICHMOND, Va. Family-owned supermarket chain Ukrop’s is for sale.
According to published reports, the chain has sent out a prospectus to such supermarket operating companies as Ahold, Supervalu and Harris Teeter. The chain operates 28 stores in Virginia.
The chain has lost its first-place share of the Richmond, Va., market to Food Lion, and some have indicated that it is having a particularly tough time in Roanoke. Some published reports have attributed the company’s difficulties to traditional but not competitive policies such as not selling alcohol and closing on Sundays.
Drug Store News could not reach the company for comment.
