PLEASANTON, Calif. Safeway and its Southern California-based Vons division announced it will donate $750,000 in support of relief efforts for communities struck by the California fires.

The Safeway Foundation announced a $500,000 cash donation to support local emergency organizations and a sum of $250,000 for food, water and other medical supplies. Additionally, the company announced that all 300 Vons and Pavilions stores will serve as collection points for customers who want to make a donation in support of local relief efforts.

As of Friday, customers could support the local relief and emergency efforts by making a donation at any of the 300 California-based Vons or Pavilions stores. The Safeway and Vons Foundations said they will donate 100 percent of all customer donations to local organizations coordinating emergency relief efforts and providing support for families and communities impacted by the fires.

During the past two years, Safeway and Vons have provided more than $8 million to support emergency relief and rebuilding efforts for disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the south Asia tsunami, and the Lake Tahoe basin fires.
