Sam's Club celebrates men's health with free screenings

6/2/2011

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — To celebrate Men's Health Month, Sam's Club is offering free men's health screening tests this weekend at select stores, which will be sponsored by Unilever brands, including Dove Men's deodorant and body wash.

The screenings, which will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the pharmacy area of Sam's Club stores, will be conducted by Carmen Ingle & Associates. The screenings will include a prostate-specific antigen test and a thyroid-stimulating hormone test, which can help detect life-threatening conditions, Sam's Club said. Carmen Ingle & Associates said it will administer one blood test per person, which will be used for either a PSA or TSH test. Men automatically will receive the PSA test, and women will receive the TSH test, unless otherwise specified. If a man would like both tests, he can request two blood samples on-site, the company noted.

In addition to the PSA and TSH test offerings, screening participants also will be given standard body mass index, blood pressure and glucose tests.

"At Sam's Club, we know personally how crucial these screenings can be," Sam's Club health-and-wellness SVP Jill Turner-Mitchael said. "According to the American Cancer Society, 1-in-6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Sam's Club hopes that by offering these free screenings, we can encourage men to get ahead of the game and take charge of their health."
