JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Southeastern Grocers, which includes the BI-LO, Haverys and Winn-Dixie Banners, on Thursday made a big commitment to the sustainability of it’s the seafood it sells. The company pledged that by 2018, it would have all fresh and frozen farm-raised seafood be four-star certified by Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) as adhering to the Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP).

“At Southeastern Grocers, we know how important it is to have fish for now and fish for the future,” EVP merchandising Scott Morris said. “To ensure this, we must focus on sustainable ways of providing customers with quality product with minimal environmental impact.”

The company said it works with leading seafood sustainability organizations to ensure its seafood is high-quality and responsibly obtained and raised. Among the organizations it works with are the GAA, the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, the Marine Stewardship Council/National Marine Fishing Service to certify and manage sustainable practices and the World Wildlife Fund to determine sustainable fisheries.

The company said it would also work to make sure its own brand tuna will be responsibly sourced and dolphin-safe by 2017.
