Sun Capital Partners to retain ownership of Marsh Supermarkets

8/24/2010

INDIANAPOLIS The private investment firm that owns Marsh Supermarkets will retain ownership of the Indianapolis-based chain, having failed to find a buyer, according to published reports.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reported that Boca Raton, Fla.-based Sun Capital Partners, which bought Marsh in 2006, had not found anyone willing to purchase it after putting it up for sale for between $130 million and $150 million. The chain operates 98 Marsh stores in Indiana and three O’Malia’s Food Markets stores in Indiana and Ohio, including 41 supermarket pharmacies.

The IBJ reported that Marsh ranked third among retailers in Indianapolis despite various remodeling and re-branding efforts, commanding 16% of the market with 45 stores, compared with 26% for Kroger, which has 46 stores in the city, and 33% for Walmart, which has 21.
