Walgreens to launch DVD burning kiosks

10/30/2007

LOS ANGELES Walgreens says it will test new DVD-burning kiosks in stores by early next year that will allow customers to burn digital copies of movies and TV shows on to blank discs.

The chain plans to work with Sonic Solutions, a firm that released industry-approved Qflix software last month that allows DVD burning. The move was approved by a group of movie studios and hardware manufacturers who believe the technology works well enough to prevent piracy.

Walgreens hasn’t discussed how much a typical DVD would cost but said it would take about 15 minutes to burn a movie to a blank disc, allowing customers time to shop and pick up their DVD before they leave the store. Other retailers including video rental giant Blockbuster are also expected to test the kiosks.
