Walmart.com goes from pool to school

7/31/2015

On the heels of Amazon's Prime Day promotion, Walmart.com is kicking off hundreds of special buys timed to a historical spike in traffic when customers start the bulk of their back-to-school shopping.

According to Walmart, traffic to Walmart.com doubles in the four days from July 31 to Aug. 3 as customers turn their attention from the pool back to school. So Walmart is kicking off Back to Class Cyber Days online and on its mobile app, featuring 30% more Rollbacks and hundreds of exclusive discounts.

“When the calendar changes from July to August, it’s like a switch flips in parents’ minds,” said Steve Breen, Senior Vice President of Merchandising for Walmart.com. “We can literally start to see it happen with a traffic spike on July 31, and this year we’re timing thousands of the season’s biggest Rollbacks to when we know our customers are coming to our site to check-off their back-to-school shopping lists.”

On top of thousands of Rollbacks, Walmart says it is taking online prices to an all-time low on the top 10 items searched in the weeks leading up to Back to Class Cyber Days. This aggressive pricing action ensures that customers can find the most popular back-to-school items at unbelievable prices, the retailer says.

Walmart is further extending its commitment to these lowest-ever prices by making certain that if supply runs out on any one of these top 10 items, a new Rollback on a like item will be added. And Rollbacks last for 90 days, so Walmart is making it more affordable for parents and students to shop from now until after the first bell.

According to the National Retail Federation Back to School Spending Forecast released on July 15, nearly half of respondents (48.4%) said they would consider buying online and picking up in a store. Free pickup is available at thousands of stores across the country, but that is particularly good news for students planning to ship orders to Walmart’s 80 select college stores that are extending their pickup window from seven days to 21 days for all orders placed over the next week. The list includes stores serving Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Arizona State University, University of Iowa, University of Georgia and Duke University, among others. All students can have items delivered directly to their dorm or house, with free shipping on orders over $35.

Back again this year is Classrooms by Walmart, an online tool that helps parents access their child’s school supply list from anywhere, letting moms check the items off their list with ease. And new this year, Walmart is bringing some fun to the season – giving customers a chance for their community to host a concert with the Vamps. Customers simply search for their child’s supply list at walmart.com/classroom and share on social media using #RockTheSavingsPromotion and the market with the most classroom supply lists searched for will have the Vamps preform for a rocking start to the school year.
