10/13/2010

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. Wegmans will be making its debut in Massachusetts early next year as the anchor store of a new $100 million shopping and residential complex called Northborough Crossing, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

In addition to the 135,000-sq.-ft. grocer, neighboring retailers include Kohl’s, Golf Town, T.J. Maxx and Toys "R" Us, among other stores. Developers Brendon Properties and New England Development recently broke ground on the mixed-use development project, which totals more than 1 million sq. ft., including Northborough Crossing, a 600,000-sq.-ft., open-air retail center. Situated in Boston’s MetroWest suburbs and theWorcester market, this development also will include 382 upscale residential units. As of 2009, there were more than 81,000 residents within a 5-mi. radius of the new development, boasting an average annual income of more than $106,000, according to New England Development.

“Over the next five to seven years, we might have half a dozen locations in Massachusetts," Ralph Uttaro, VP real estate development for Wegmans, told the Globe. “We’re looking for high-density areas with high levels of income and education."
