Weis Markets to complete Giant Markets purchase
SUNBURY, Pa. Weis Markets on Wednesday announced its plans to complete the purchase of 11 Giant Markets Aug. 24.
“We plan a lightening quick changeover,” stated Weis spokesman Dennis Curtin. “Our Binghamton, [N.Y.] store associates will be converting each store’s front-end system including cash registers and scanners along with scales. We will also be converting each store’s delivery systems,” he said. “Ordinarily, this process takes at least three days but we expect to begin our work on Sunday evening and have it completed by the time we re-open on Tuesday morning.”
Based in Sunbury, where the first Weis store opened in 1912, Weis Markets currently operates 154 stores in five states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia. When it completes the purchase of Giant Markets of Binghamton, it will operate 165 stores, including 12 in the Southern Tier.
