Weis Markets completes Giant Markets purchase
SUNBURY, Pa. Weis Markets has completed its purchase of a regional supermarket chain.
Weis Markets' purchase of 11 Giant Markets stores located in Broome County, N.Y. including units in Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, Endwell and Johnson City, the retail chain said Monday.
"We have completed our acquisition on schedule and are acquiring a group of stores with a strong market presence in the Southern Tier. For more than 70 years, Giant Markets has excelled at being a locally focused retailer," said Weis Markets' vice chairman Jonathan Weis. "We will build on these strengths and are extremely pleased to welcome nearly a thousand former Giant Markets associates to our company. They have helped their stores achieve an excellent reputation for taking care of their customers and we are pleased to be working with them."
All eleven stores, which closed on Sunday evening for conversion, will reopen on Tuesday at 7 a.m. Weis Markets will hold a grand opening celebration on Aug. 30 when five of these stores will transition to a 24-hour schedule.
Based in Sunbury, Pa., Weis Markets now operates 165 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia. In 2008, it generated $2.4 billion in sales.
