CRN posts consumer video explaining DSHEA

10/29/2014

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Wednesday marked the 20th anniversary of the Dietary Supplement Health and Edcuation Act of 1994 with a consumer video to explain the importance of DSHEA and to recognize the impact it has had on the industry.

"We wouldn't be talking about a $35 billion industry if it weren't for this law that clearly defined what the products are and then defined what the rights and requirements were going to be to people who wanted to enter the industry," said Steve Mister, CRN president and CEO.

"DSHEA was very important because it represents the birth of the [dietary supplement] industry as we know it," said Duffy MacKay, VP scientific and regulatory affairs at CRN.

"It took a well-meaning industry that truly was the wild, wild west and changed it," said Mike Greene, CRN VP government relations. "[DSHEA] helped it evolve and grow into the great mainstream industry that we have today."
