Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has received the Food and Drug Administration’s nod for an over-the-counter generic version of AstraZeneca’s Nexium 24 hour delayed-release capsules (esomeprazole magnesium) in a 20 mg dosage strength.
The OTC proton pump inhibitor is used to treat frequent heartburn occurring two or more days a week in adults.
"This launch continues to demonstrate our deep R&D and manufacturing capabilities to bring newer store-brand OTC medications to the market,” Dr. Reddy’s vice president and head of U.S. OTC and specialty Rx business Milan Kalawadia said. “We look forward to collaborating with our customers to provide high-quality, affordable alternatives to consumers.”
The product had a market value of approximately $311 million for the most recent 12 months ending May 2018, according to IRI.
