Half of aging adults want more strength, energy

6/1/2016

While Americans are redefining what it means to age well and stay healthy, many adults ages 50 years and older are still feeling the effects of aging. AARP and Abbott surveyed 1,480 Americans ages 50 years and older and found that while a majority see themselves as being in good health, 1-in-2 reported that they wished they had more strength or energy.

When it came to a person’s muscle health, nearly three-quarters (73%) of people surveyed knew that adults naturally lose muscle with age, and 28% said they had already noticed some loss. And despite the fact that two-thirds said they had concerns about the impact of muscle loss, many respondents were not very concerned about the loss at this time.

A majority of people (83%) did not know how much protein they actually need. The recommended daily amount of protein for adults is roughly 53 g for a 150-lb. adult.

Abbott’s Ensure brand still dominates sales within the adult nutrition set, commanding 36.2% of the dollar volume of the ready-to-drink nutrition solution business, with $1.1 billion in sales. The company most recently launched Ensure Enlive to help users rebuild lost muscle and regain strength and energy.

Another brand making its way into adult nutrition sets is Ion Labs’ ProCharge, a proprietary blend of hydrolyzed collagen and whey protein isolate, delivering more than 20 g of protein per ounce.
