Report: Pa. pharmacy board approves OTC sales of needles
HARRISBURG, Pa. The Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy earlier this month enacted a state law that allows over-the-counter sales of hypodermic needles and syringes, according to published reports.
The change, effective immediately, is aimed at reducing the spread of diseases, such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C, by sharing needles.
The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association supported the changes, despite the fact that the new legislation carries no age restrictions or purchase restrictions. Initially, the PPA had lobbied for an 18-and-older age restriction and a 30-needle ceiling on purchases.
The needles will be merchandised behind the pharmacy counter.
