Study finds fiber may be beneficial to children's diet

8/17/2009

GAINESVILLE, Fla. A University of Florida study released earlier this month touted the benefits of fiber in children as a possible preventative measure for obesity and diabetes.

“[Fiber] actually has lots of health … in managing childhood obesity,” said University of Florida researcher Rick Davis during University of Florida News webcast. “High fiber foods tend to be more filling; children eat less,” he said.

Soluble fibers are especially beneficial in the prevention of obesity and diabetes. “In those who have obesity, diabetes, pre-diabetes or a history of diabetes in their family, or maybe early elevations of cholesterol that they’re not ready for medications, high fiber diets can be part of [the regimen] as far as maybe preventing or delaying the disease,” Davis added.
