Study finds folic acid may not reduce colon cancer risk

12/7/2009

HOUSTON Researchers recently reported that the B vitamin folic acid does not help reduce recurrent colon cancer in a study published in the December issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

To assess the effect of folic acid supplementation on recurrent colorectal adenoma, researchers conducted a cost-efficient, double-blind, randomized trial among participants of 2 large prospective cohorts, the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Nurses’ Health Study. Some 700 participants, all of whom had a prior diagnosis of colon cancer, were randomly assigned to receive folic acid or placebo. Follow-ups ensued over the next three to six years. There was no statistical difference between the group supplementing with folic acid and the control group with regard to recurrent colon cancer, researchers reported.
