Study: Pharmacists positively impact diabetes health

5/29/2015

THOROFARE, N.J. - Pharmacists caring for underserved patients with suboptimally controlled type 2 diabetes were more adherent to their medications and had better glycemic control than those who did not have a pharmacist in their care team, according to a recent report in the journal The Diabetes Educator, Healio reported Wednesday

Consuelo Wilkins of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and colleagues conducted a retrospective review of 100 patient records to determine the effect of pharmacist-directed medication therapy management.

“Findings from this study may inform the development of metrics to more systematically assess the effects of pharmacist-directed MTM on health outcomes,” the researchers wrote. “These findings in a community health clinic population have broad implications for improving health care delivery and health outcomes in community-based settings.”
