Study suggests minorities are more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
MCDONOUGH, Ga. Minorities are more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as compared with Caucasians, according to published reports citing a recent study in Ethnicity and Disease.
The findings suggest that genetics might play a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes, authors of the study concluded.
Researchers examined 187,000 adults from five ethnic groups who participated in the Multiethnic Cohort Study of Diet and Cancer. Almost 12% of the participants reported having diabetes. Diabetes prevalence was about 16% in American Indians and Hispanics, 15% in blacks, 10% in Japanese-Americans and 6% in whites.
