Walgreens Flu Index: Flu activity picks up in the South

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Flu activity is picking up across the South, according to the latest Walgreens Flu Index released Tuesday. For the week ended Dec. 5, eight of the top 10 designated marketing areas identified by Walgreens as experiencing significant flu activity gains were below the Mason Dixon line. 


 


The top 10 DMAs ranked by flu activity gains for the week ended Dec. 5 were: 


 



  1. Chattanooga, Tenn.;


  2. Rockford, Ill.;


  3. Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas;


  4. Baton Rouge, La.;


  5. Mobile, Ala. – Pensacola (Ft. Walton Beach), Fla.;


  6. Nashville, Tenn.;


  7. Louisville, Ky.;


  8. Jackson, Miss.;


  9. Birmingham (Anniston and Tuscaloosa), Ala.; and


  10. St. Louis.



 


The top 10 DMAs ranked by flu activity were: 


 



  1. Harlingen-Weslaco-Brownsville-McAllen, Texas;


  2. New Orleans;


  3. Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas;


  4. Chattanooga, Tenn.;


  5. Tallahassee, Fla. – Thomasville, Ga.;


  6. Houston;


  7. Baton Rouge, La.;


  8. St. Louis;


  9. Jackson, Miss.; and


  10. Mobile, Ala. – Pensacola (Ft. Walton Beach), Fla.



The Walgreens Flu Index is a weekly report developed to provide state- and market-specific information regarding flu activity, and ranking of those experiencing the highest incidences of influenza across the country. 


 


With the ability to generate hyper-local data that is as specific as a single zip code, the index aims to drive consumer awareness and prevention within communities, while also serving as a resource for health departments, media and others at the local level.
