Abaxis offers clinics point-of-care blood analysis

9/18/2008

UNION CITY, Calif. Those retail-based clinics that shy away from treating conditions that require lab tests may now have a solution as Abaxis, a medical products company manufacturing point-of-care blood analysis systems, is promoting its point-of-care chemistry analyzer that offers CLIA-waived tests for lab results in 12 minutes.

The Piccolo Xpress is a chemistry analyzer that offers a CLIA-waived Comprehensive Metabolic Panel—the test frequently used by physicians, in addition to other professionals. The compact size of the device, about the size of a shoebox, makes it easy to use, and affordable leasing options make the device a logical fit for the retail clinic setting, according to the company.

“The nine CLIA waived panels now on the Abaxis menu represent over 90 percent of all general chemistries ordered in the United States,” stated Clint Severson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Abaxis. “By removing the barriers associated with moderately complex chemistry analysis, a host of non-traditional healthcare environments such as retail clinics, mobile clinics and home healthcare professionals can now conduct comprehensive health screenings at the point of care.”

The Abaxis CLIA waived menu of health panels includes:

  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
  • Basic Metabolic Panel
  • Electrolyte Panel
  • Kidney Check
  • Lipid Panel
  • Lipid Panel Plus
  • Liver Panel Plus
  • General Chemistry 6
  • General Chemistry 13
