WOONSOCKET, R.I. — As part of American Pharmacists Month, CVS Health is recognizing the work that its pharmacists do to improve the health of their patients through increased access to care.
"As our nation's health care landscape changes, our pharmacists are being called upon to play a broader role in a patient's overall health care team," CVS Health president and CEO Larry Merlo said. "Pharmacists not only provide one-on-one trusted counsel to patients each and every day, they are also delivering vital health care services, such as providing immunizations, and offering medication reviews to ensure patients are getting the most out of their entire medication regimen."
CVS Health noted that its pharmacists’ roles go beyond the pharmacy counter and include offering such convenient and accessible care options as flu shots and other vaccinations, as well as hormonal contraceptives in California and Oregon. Additionally, CVS Health pharmacist do the daily work of being medication experts who can offer solutions to keep patients adherent. The new ScriptPath prescription management system allows pharmacists to recommend a consolidated dosing schedule to drive adherence and patient understanding.
Pharmacists across CVS Health also over telephonic adherence and clinical support to members of the CVS Caremark pharmacy benefits manager and CVS Specialty patients. They also review medications submitted for mail delivery and counsel patients through such programs as Pharmacy Advisor, which focuses on medication adherence and outcomes for patients with such chronic conditions as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
"Our pharmacists are not only the familiar faces you see behind the counter at your local CVS Pharmacy," Merlo said. "Whether through Omnicare, CVS Caremark, CVS Specialty or Coram, our pharmacists are providing expert clinical care to patients with a wide range of medication regimens, from simple to complex."
The company also will celebrate National Pharmacy Technician Day on Oct. 17 to recognize the more than 50,000 pharmacy technicians that provide support to the company’s pharmacists and pharmacy teams.
