The ‘doctor is in’ at select Meijer supercenters

9/21/2007

CHICAGO According to published reports Meijer has opened physician-staffed health clinics in two of its Chicago stores, and plans to add a third by the end of the month. The new clinics, which operate under the name Medical Marts, are currently in operation in Aurora and St. Charles, Ill., and a third is planned for Algonquin.

The typical Medical Mart is staffed by two full-time primary care physicians, two full-time medical assistants or nurses, and provides a full range of health care services. Because it is a physician-staffed model versus the nurse practitioner-staffed model that is most common in the rapidly burgeoning retail health clinic industry, Medical Marts can offer a deeper menu of services on site, including extensive lab testing.

Medical Marts, which first emerged on the retail clinic scene in May 2006, when it announced a partnership with Shopko, also currently operates seven other clinics in Shopko stores in the state of Utah, including stores in Salt Lake City, Bountiful, West Jordan, West Valley, Ogden (2) and Logan, Utah.

In addition, Medical Mart is expected to open clinics in two Kmart pharmacy stores in Rockford, Ill., by November.
