FDA approves new test to determine MRSA

WASHINGTON Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Spectra methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas test has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, according to published reports.

The test determines if a patient has MRSA, which is a bacterium that causes infections to the body, and is commonly known as a staph infection, or the “super bug.” According to published reports, the test would provide results in 24 hours and will be manufactured under Thermo Fisher’s specialty brand, Remel.

The presence of MRSA has increased 8 to 11 times, and according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control Epidemiology, MRSA infects 46 in 1000 patients in the United States.
