FDA urges manufacturers to choose peanut suppliers wisely
ROCKVILLE, Md. In the wake of the nationwide peanut butter contamination scandal, the Food and Drug Administration is advising manufacturers to pay close attention to where they get their peanuts.
The agency recommends that manufacturers obtain peanut ingredients only from suppliers known to use production methods that adequately reduce the presence of Salmonella bacteria and ensure that their own manufacturing processes reduce it.
Earlier this year, authorities traced a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella to food products made with peanut butter from Peanut Corporation of America. The company launched a massive recall of its products, forcing it to file for liquidation.
