HHS to offer $1 million to uninsured Gustav victims
WASHINGTON The Department of Health and Human Services will give $1 million in individual assistance to victims of Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana who lack health insurance, Secretary Mike Leavitt announced Saturday.
The department has begun providing benefits through the Emergency Prescription Assistance Program administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Claims for people with private or public health insurance are not eligible.
EPAP covers one-time, 30-day supplies of medications and durable medical equipment, such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs and equipment for diabetics.
“This program is an example of public and private entities working together to improve our nation’s ability to respond in emergencies,” Leavitt said. “Over the past year, CMS has worked with pharmacy industry groups and leading technology companies to incorporate their planning and unique capabilities into the programs’ procedures and processes.”
